CSFP was created by Congress to address hunger in specific
population groups in a way that mutually promotes agriculture policy
and alleviates hunger through the use of food commodities acquired
under government farm supports. CSFP is an important outlet for the
food commodities supported under various farm programs.
Yesterday the House
Agricultural Appropriations Subcommittee allocated approximately a
$20 million increase for our program by awarding CSFP $159,327,000
for FY 09! While we all know that rising food prices might
diminish the buying power of this increase, we need to recognize the
effort that our champions have made to grow our program. Support
for CSFP has been increasing at a tremendous rate and that is due in
part to your hard work as an advocate. Our work is not
done. Please
take a moment to reach out to members of the full Appropriations
Committee who are expected to consider the Agriculture
Appropriations bill AS EARLY AS NEXT WEEK!
